Wikipedia
Over 2 million articles in a completely open-source format.  This is the place to start for most articles.

Not a totally free site (14-day free trial), but a good place to start tracing that family tree.

Arkansas Black History On Line
The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies maintains this site.  It is the largest online collection of materials relating to the history of Arkansas African-Americans.

Arkansas Genealogical Project
Part of the WorldGenWeb Project - a non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to providing genealogical and historical records and resources for world-wide access.

Arkansas History Commission
The commission organizes and maintains the state and local history of Arkansas by collecting manuscript materials, census records, military records, family histories, and various county, state, and federal records.

Rootsweb.com
Claims to be the oldest and largest free genealogy site, with 480 million names on file.  There are limited free services and paid premium services.

Internet Public Library
The Internet Public Library features a searchable, subject-categorized directory of authoritative websites; links to online texts, newspapers, and magazines; and the Ask-A-Question online reference service.

The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution, and it serves as the research arm of Congress.  It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 120 million items.
